RESTORING THE HEART OF HAMMERSMITH

Hammersmith & Fulham Civic Campus

A radically inclusive, zero-harm community campus.

INSIGHT

• Hammersmith and Fulham Council wanted to move away from the traditional image of the Town Hall as a distant, dusty municipal building and instead build an exciting new, inclusive civic centre that invites in residents and provides facilities that lift the neighbourhood and which people can enjoy

• The scheme includes affordable housing, community entertainment amenities, and council and co-working places

• The scheme is an exemplar of leadership in air quality improvement, net zero, and accessibility

• We are using a pioneering citizen engagement strategy to create one of the most accessible series of buildings anywhere in the world

IDEA

• By mapping the unique natural ecosystem and the community's needs, an electrified low-carbon scheme drawing on the London aquifer was developed

• Deliver practical, cost-effective solutions that incorporate cutting-edge environmental technology to deliver an energy-efficient civic and mixed-use campus fit for the 21st century.

• Address the needs of local residents and businesses by supplying affordable warmth

• Continuously ensure that the energy is optimised

IMPLEMENTATION

  • Using Hysopt software, the team modelled different energy system options, including CHP and heat pumps, with an appraisal of carbon emissions, operational efficiency and lifecycle investment

  • The scheme includes two 136m deep boreholes (400cm in diameter) to exchange energy with the London aquifer, providing site-wide heating and cooling. This will produce 600 kW of heating and cooling and can recover energy between the two systems

  • The design combines thermal storage with a flexible operating strategy to deliver affordable heat whilst surpassing the carbon reduction targets set by regional planning policy and local planning systems

  • We worked closely with the principal designer to mitigate and eliminate risks throughout the project lifecycle

Understanding the changing nature of communities to cultivate connection and enhance quality of life for everyone.

IMPACT

  • The project will deliver affordable warmth to residents and significantly improve air quality, exceeding the regionally set carbon reduction targets

  • The project delivered a board-level briefing for A2 Dominion and Hammersmith & Fulham Council on the future of energy and climate risk to build capacity within these organisations

  • Winner of People’s Choice Award NLA New London Awards 2020

  • Highly Commended Stakeholder Engagement in Planning Awards 2020
